Engineering Process

As a Mechanical engineering student, I have my engineering process. The main steps are below:
1. Define the problems
2. State what I have
3. Make assumptions
4. Research
5. Analyze
6. Develop solution
7. Evaluation
8. Document result
I faced many design problems in the mechanical field and not any of them can be solved in the first developed solution. There is a loop between evaluation and develop solution because I always need to redevelop solution after I apply the assessment. The final step, document result, may be confirmed after many times of loop.
This idea first came to me when I designed the secondary gear reducer. You can find more detail on my Artifacts page. This project was to develop a reducer that could meet some specific requirement. The only information I had were Gear Ratio and maximum size. Firstly, I made many assumptions for different pairs of size, material, and other properties. After doing a carefully researching, I selected multiple options from my assumptions that could work. Secondly, I made calculations to evaluate those options and decided which one was the best. Then, I followed the design process and came up with a feasible design. Thirdly, I assessed this design and made some adjustments. I kept repeating this step until I got a perfect result. Finally, I made a report with all drawings, calculations, and justifications that related to my final design. I followed this engineering process for most of my other artifacts. Furthermore, this process works perfect for me and I will keep using it for my future projects.
Hope my Personal Engineering Process is helpful to you!
